Some Noteworthy ’26 West Virginia Runningbacks

Northeast

Blake Sanders

Background: A 5’10”, 170-pound running back in the class of 2026 from Spring Mills High School (4A). Sanders transferred to Spring Mills from Musselman in 2024, where he had previously been their primary offensive weapon. During the Cardinals’ historic 2024 title game run, he showcased his versatility as a slashing runner and a pass catcher out of the backfield. While slightly lighter than some peers, his notable twitchiness makes him highly productive in the open field.

Isaac Martin

Martin solidified his statewide reputation in 2024 while playing for one of the perennial powers. He combines impressive size with nimble feet and excellent balance. Martin rushed for over 1,000 yards, averaging more than seven yards per carry. Like many well-built running backs, his college recruitment may lean toward positions like an athletic standup end or linebacker.

He showcased sprinter-level speed, with the ability to plant his foot and accelerate to the end zone, making him a touchdown threat on any play from anywhere on the field. Grace also handled a significant workload, amassing over 1,300 rushing yards.

Southeast

Sylas Nelson

Background: A 6’0″, 205-pound athlete in the class of 2026 from Independence High School (2A). Nelson was a cornerstone of an offense that made a deep postseason run. Over his career, he has excelled as a quarterback, wide receiver, and running back, putting up impressive numbers at each position. Well-built and physical, Nelson thrives as the game progresses, often improving in the later stages. His collegiate recruitment could leverage his skill set and physicality by transitioning him into an athletic linebacker role.
