2028/2029 West Virginia Quarterback Prospect Update

C&C took a look at the top 2028/2029 quarterback several months back with the full article here, but here is the full breakdown.

Looking back at our earlier breakdown of the 2029 quarterback class from several months ago, the evaluation highlighted several young West Virginia passers who were already showing early development signals, while also mixing in a broader group of 2028 quarterbacks who had already established varsity production.

The true 2029 developmental names included Marek Midkiff (Huntington) and Maxx Taylor (Wheeling Park), both still early in their progression but showing encouraging athletic traits and long-term upside at the position.

Additional players originally listed in the broader evaluation (2028 group) included Jaxson Workman (Liberty), Payton Metheny (Petersburg), Robbie Jones (Philip Barbour), Breck Allen (Williamstown), Dakota Dalton (Chapmanville), Rayce Dickerson (Midland Trail), and Cooper Collins (Clay County), all of whom had already begun to separate themselves through production or early program impact.

Several passers were also labeled as proven varsity contributors, including Peyton Grigsby (Herbert Hoover), Ceno Riley (South Charleston), Trevor Roof (East Hardy), Maddox Bowen (Oak Glen; now Madonna), and Chase Kinsey (Grafton).

The top five quarterbacks in the piece were led by Maddox Twigg (Morgantown) at No. 1, followed by Anthony Smith (Fairmont Senior), Max Simpson (Bluefield), Colton Roberson (Pendleton County), and Brock Green (Independence), each recognized for production, athletic traits, and long-term recruiting upside.

Updates

There has not been a major amount of transfer movement within this quarterback group, with the biggest development being Maddox Bowen returning to Madonna now that the program appears back on track for a stable return to competition.

Several quarterbacks have continued to elevate their stock throughout the camp and showcase circuit, including Breck Allen of Williamstown. Allen continues to impress with his athleticism and overall versatility, looking like the type of dual-threat quarterback an offense can truly be built around. His ability to extend plays while remaining dangerous as a runner gives him a unique ceiling in this class.

Another passer who made a strong statement at the showcase was Trevor Roof from East Hardy. Roof showcased one of the better pure arms in attendance and continues trending toward being one of the premier quarterbacks in Class A entering the coming seasons.

Ceno Riley of South Charleston picked up his first collegiate offer from West Virginia Wesleyan following the showcase, and it was well deserved. Riley looked polished throughout throwing sessions while also displaying quality athleticism and movement skills outside the pocket.

Meanwhile, both Brock Green (Independence) and Max Simpson (Bluefield) continue climbing quarterback rankings as strong camp and drill film keeps emerging from both prospects. Their offseason development has been noticeable, particularly with consistency and mechanics.

One of the more intriguing names in the class remains Peyton Grigsby of Herbert Hoover. Grigsby appears positioned to become a true dark horse among this loaded quarterback group. After putting up stellar production during the 2025 season, he looks to have taken another step forward across all aspects of his game, including decision-making, timing, and overall command of the offense.

At the top of the class, Maddox Twigg (Morgantown) and Anthony Smith (Fairmont Senior) still headline the state’s quarterback talent. Twigg’s recruitment continues to gain momentum with an offer list now highlighted by Syracuse, West Virginia, and Jacksonville State. Smith’s recruitment has expanded rapidly as well, now sitting in double-digit Division I offers with programs such as North Carolina, Syracuse, and UConn involved.

New Names

It is still early in the evaluation process for younger quarterbacks, but several new names have started generating attention since the first round of rankings and evaluations.

Tyler Hudson (East Fairmont, 2028) is a young quarterback worth monitoring moving forward, while Paxton Berger (University, 2029) has already begun creating buzz as one of the more promising young passers in the state.

Another 2029 name to continue tracking is Kamden Sperringer from Brooke, who has shown early flashes of upside. Jeremih DeLong (River View, 2028) has already put together encouraging film at a young age and appears to have a solid developmental foundation.

Corbin Scheuvront (Robert C. Byrd, 2029) turned in several strong performances during the C&C camp series, while Mason Chenoweth (Hampshire, 2028) emerged as one of the pleasant breakout performers at the showcase event.

Additionally, both Isaiah Cutlip (Webster County, 2028) and Dominic Trotta (Fairmont Senior, 2028) continue looking like notable young quarterback prospects with encouraging long-term potential.
