AAA Team to Watch: Princeton Tigers

Princeton has taken its lumps in the last few years but that’s what happens when a program is being structured. In the last several seasons Coach Chris Pedigo has transformed the Princeton offense into one of the purest air raids in West Virginia. 2020 should see a perfect storm of this system as sophomore Grant Cochran returns after a record-breaking freshman year at quarterback. He will be blessed to have one of the best receivers in the state with the tall and well-handed senior Ethan Parsons. Alongside Parsons is another high-level target with athletic senior Josiah Honaker- also a top-ranked defensive back.

However, to avoid being one-dimensional, it seems like they will utilize sleeper runningback Amir Powell to truly optimize their offense. Of course, a big key will be their maturing line and a defense that doesn’t force them to go into shootouts. The Virginia high school football cancellation messed up a huge segment of their original schedule. The biggest development from this was the scheduling of a rare home-and-home with rival Bluefield. Playing such a team twice in a year will be incredibly tough. However, aside from them and Parkersburg South, the Tigers will have the talent to knock off their remaining six opponents. Definitely the most intriguing AAA team in this region.

AA Team to Watch: Bluefield Beavers

To watch Bluefield, in 2019, seamlessly transition from a traditional run scheme to a high-flying pass game was equally awesome and terrifying. As usual, Bluefield will be a favorite for the state title game. This is due to such a spoil of riches in multiple places despite graduating several Division One prospects. Offensively, the story will be senior quarterback Carson Deeb and his three Top 10 wide receivers Brandon Wiley, Juwuan Green, Jacorian Green. Perhaps no one has more firepower in the air than Bluefield in any classification.

Their run game, frontlines, and defense all are littered with Big Board talent as well including rising freshman runner Amir Hairston, Top 15 lineman Derick Flack Jr., Top 10 linebacker Sean Mitchell, and Top 15 defensive back Ryker Brown. Like other local teams, their schedule has been flipped with Virginia’s cancellation. As of now, they have seven games including a home-and-home with AAA rival Princeton. They hold the odds to win in every game. However, late season matchups with Point Pleasant and Mingo Central are sure to be exciting. Bluefield is a solid favorite for the AA state title.

A Team to Watch: Greenbrier West

One of the best stories of 2019 was Greenbrier West’s unexpected rise to the top. After re-hiring the first coach in school history, Toby Harris, the Cavaliers kept winning and winning. From a measly C&C prediction to a quarterfinal appearance, it was an awesome year. However, 2020 might take it one step further. With 18 returning starters, Greenbrier West is a considerable favorite for the Class A title.

Much of this momentum is centered around their huge, bruising runningback, Noah Brown, who was among the most prolific rushers last season. He will have a stout line blocking for him including Big Board players Hunter Starkey and Cole McClung. Plenty of all-state level skill players surround this group such as quarterback Kaiden Pack, wide receiver Lawson Vaughn, linebacker Zach McClung, and defensive back Levi Weikle. Their schedule isn’t particularly challenging but should feature some big games with Buffalo and Midland Trail. Their road to Wheeling starts soon.
