What to Expect
The Mohigans and Big Reds meet once again for what is set to be an electric season opener. These teams battled last year to open the season in Morgantown, where the Mohigans pulled away at the end after back-and-forth runs by both squads. These are two very different teams from those we saw in 2018. Parkersburg has graduated multiple star seniors included star-QB Jake Johnson, electric receiver/defensive back Kionte Peacock, and Penn State recruit Brenton Strange.
The Mohigans lost some seniors too such as WVU recruit Nick Malone and reliable back Ty Konchesky- they reload much of their roster though. Morgantown will return their quarterback Cameron Rice as well as multiple players that will compose an
elite receiver corps. With a veteran offensive line and a reliable senior runningback in Jace Whetsell, we expect to see the Mohigans establish dominance in the run game, but don’t be fooled, Morgantown will go to the air early and often in this contest with receivers Preston Fox and Quin Thompson.
The Big Red defense will be leaned on heavily by coach Mike Byus. In all senses of the word, the Parkersburg defense is an improvement over what they put on the field last season. With senior linebacker Gage Fiore leading the front seven, there will be plenty of experience, but the defensive line will lack in size. Justin Waybright and CJ Wade are both speedy edge players that could pressure Rice throughout the game.
This is an important game for both teams. Neither play an easy schedule and starting off 1-0 is huge. We are excited to see if Morgantown pushes into a legitimate top 8 AAA team and also if Mike Byus pulls off another spectacular coaching job.
